When Should I Get Driving Lessons?

By Around About Driving School — Qualified Driving Instructors, Caboolture QLD

Getting the Timing Right for Your Driving Lessons

As instructors who work with learner drivers at every stage of their journey — from brand-new L-platers to test-ready drivers — we are often asked "When is the best time to start professional lessons?" The answer has two parts: when in your learner journey, and what time of day.

Best Stage in Your Learner Journey

    Right at the Start

Starting with a qualified instructor from your very first drive is the approach we recommend most. You learn correct techniques from day one — proper mirror checks, smooth braking, safe positioning — before any bad habits form. Your supervising driver also benefits, as they can reinforce what your instructor teaches during practice sessions between lessons.

Each hour with a qualified instructor counts as three hours in your learner logbook, so professional lessons also accelerate your progress towards the 100-hour requirement.

    Midway Through Your Logbook Hours

If you started with a supervisor only, booking a few professional lessons around the 50-hour mark is a smart move. Your instructor can check your technique, correct any habits that may have crept in, and introduce more advanced skills like roundabout navigation, merging, and hazard perception.

    Before Your Driving Test

The weeks leading up to your test are critical. Professional lessons at this stage help you polish skills, build confidence on specific manoeuvres, and practise on the actual test routes. Your instructor can run mock tests so you know exactly what to expect. Read our guide on how to pass your Queensland driving test.

Best Time of Day for Lessons

You should eventually drive in all conditions, but when starting out, building up gradually makes sense:

    Early Morning — Quiet Roads

Before rush hour, traffic is light. This is ideal for first-time drivers who need to focus on basic controls without the pressure of heavy traffic. Early morning light also provides good visibility.

    Mid-Morning to Early Afternoon

Moderate traffic gives you real-world experience without being overwhelming. This is where most of our Caboolture and Morayfield lessons are booked — a good balance of traffic exposure and manageable complexity.

Peak Hour — When You Are Ready

Once you are comfortable with general driving, tackling peak-hour traffic builds essential skills: lane changes under pressure, navigating busy roundabouts, and maintaining composure in stop-start conditions.

    Night Driving

You need at least 10 hours of night driving in your logbook. Night introduces different challenges — reduced visibility, headlight glare, and difficulty judging distances. Book a few professional night lessons to learn these skills safely with an instructor beside you.
